About the SIS (TÜV Rheinland) Course

The SIS (TÜV Rheinland) Certification Course is a five-day intensive program based on IEC 61508:2010 and IEC 61511:2016.

It builds practical competence to design, implement, assess, and manage Safety Instrumented Systems in high-hazard industries, providing both the technical foundation and applied skills required for effective, risk-based safety management.

Key Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and terminology of Functional Safety (FS) and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
  • Interpret and understand the requirements of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 within real industrial contexts.
  • Understand Hazard & Risk Assessments as part of the SIS Safety Lifecycle.
  • Allocate safety functions to appropriate protection layers.
  • Understand the principles of SIL Determination methods such as:
    - Fault Tree Analysis
    - Safety Layer Matrix
    - Calibrated Risk Graph
    - LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis)
  • Know what Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS) are.
  • Understand the work involved in SIS design, engineering, verification, validation, and lifecycle management requirements.
  • Understand Functional Safety Management (FSM), auditing, and Functional Safety Assessment (FSA) principles.
  • Confidently participate in activities across the SIS Safety Lifecycle.

Course Details

  • Duration:  4 classroom training days + 1/2-day exam
  •  Assessment: 4.5-hour certification exam (Day 5 - Morning)
  • Standards Covered: IEC 61508:2010 & IEC 61511:2016
  • Certification: TÜV (Rheinland) Functional Safety Certification (upon successful completion)
